In the first chapters of the Gospel according to Luke we can find three great canticles that follows the tradition of the Old Testament where it gradually open up the spiritual, human and religious perspectives typical to the Gospel. In progression, the three Canticles as follows are: the canticle of Zechariah (the Benedictus), the Magnificat of Mary, and to that of Simeon (the Nunc dimittis). In the context of the narrative in which the incarnation of Christ is found- that is, the revelation or the entrance of God made man into the genealogy and into human history- the theme of “fraternity” is opened to new dimensions: the carnal one linked to the Law and to the one that is marked by Grace. The course will propose an exegesis of the three Canticles in their biblical context and in their spiritual perspectives, alongside a musical interpretation through the reading of some famous musical compositions based on them (from Bach to Byrd, from Palestrina to Purcell, from Josquin to Gounod…), whose listening guide are both musical and theological terms. The course will take place from 14 to 20 July at the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Pietralba (BZ). The event will be spearheaded by the biblical scholar P. Garuti and master C. Bertoglio.
